Wearable Intelligent Reporting Environment (WIRE)

View our flash presentation

Overview

Wearable Intelligent Reporting Environment (WIRE) is an intelligent system that understands what the user says, knows time and location, and extracts and organizes essential information. It expedites the analysis and dissemination of time-critical information. For example, WIRE can recognize the description of a group of insurgents and automatically populates a form with the size of the group, equipment, event time, and location as the observer describes the scene. The WIRE system allows the warfighter to make timely, accurate, complete reports without compromising vigilance, readiness, or safety.

Innovative Approach

WIRE can be used on a number of platforms including wearable computers through a hands-free interface. Because WIRE is intelligent, it does not just listen and repeat, it understands. And while the system is sophisticated, it is intuitive to use, requiring little training because information is collected in a conversational manner. WIRE understands a wide variety of accents and phrases, and it also understands the context of a report so that the user does not have to repeat information.

Program Features:

  • Robust and easy to use: simple method of entering reports and querying database.
  • Intuitive: Uses a natural language speech interface that does not require user training.
  • Non-evasive: to minimally disrupt the warfighter, the system integrates with current radio/communication system or can be hands-free.
  • Timely: Ensures latest information is available to squad/platoon leader.
  • Available on demand: It is constantly listening until the user initiates the system.
  • Adaptive: Speaker input mode can be adjusted to stealth, training, or information exchange modes.
  • Flexible: Allows information to be given in any order.
  • Knowledgeable: Understands context.
  • Accurate: Understanding is based on real data coming from Iraq and Marine interactions.
  • Communicative: Allows reports to be transmitted wirelessly, through secure radio or downloaded on return to base.
  • Spatially aware: Integrated with sensors such as GPS and time.

Program Benefits:

  • Reduces cognitive load because the user can speak naturally without memorizing fixed commands.
  • Does not compromise safety because it fits in with current equipment.
  • Increased speed of analysis and dissemination of information.
  • Ensures collection of full report .
  • Provides any-time access to relevant online databases.
